The Chargers lost nine games by seven points or less in 2016 and have already dropped two in the same fashion to start 2017.
Heartbreaking losses have become synonymous with the franchise and so another one to the Miami Dolphins in Week 2 — this time a 19-17 defeat — to open their time in the StubHub Center was perfectly fitting for the team.
A) Cutler’s arm isn’t what it used to be and the 34-year-old quarterback couldn’t control a heave downfield.
B) This wasn’t a Hail Mary at all, and was just a way to wind out the final two seconds of the half without giving the Chargers a chance of their own.
I’m leaning toward the second possibility, considering the receiver running down the right sideline turned to run off the field without even tracking the ball.
Of course, it wouldn’t take too long for the receiver to take a quick glance over his shoulder and realize right away that he wouldn’t have a chance at hauling in the pass. Either way, hurling the ball so far out of bounds that it almost hits a cheerleader is a pretty fun way to end a half.
The New York Giants are on primetime for the second week in a row when they host the Detroit Lions on Monday Night Football (8:30 p.m. ET, ESPN/WatchESPN). They’ll hope to have a much better performance than their Week 1 stinker against the Dallas Cowboys, with Odell Beckham Jr. set to make his season debut.
The Lions also have problems with their run game, but it didn’t matter much in their 35-23 win over the Arizona Cardinals. Matthew Stafford picked up his fourth-quarter Adrian Beltre Jersey heroics again, hitting Kenny Golladay on two touchdown passes that pulled the Lions ahead. Stafford finished the day with four touchdowns T.J. Ward Youth Jersey and 292 yards on 29-of-41 passing.
As college football begins, so does the start of NFL area scouts traveling the country to evaluate the 2018 NFL Draft class.
Game Womens Mark Stone Jersey
Optimum Scouting has evaluated over 4,000 players for the 2018 NFL Draft class based on last year’s film, plus college and NFL personnel discussions. The 2018 class has plenty of quarterback talent to get excited about, but the offensive line class might be the best we’ve seen in some time.
Plus, Bradley Chubb, Juwan Johnson and Brian O’Neil are names to get familiar with before they emerge as star prospects this season.
Jarvis Landry, WR, Dolphins: Landry has been selected to the Pro Bowl each of the last two years and has quietly become one of the NFL’s top playmakers. Former LSU teammate Odell Beckham Jr., will get $1.84 million this year in the fourth year of his rookie deal. Landry, who was a second-round pick in the 2014 draft that saw Beckham go 12th overall, is due $893,852 this season and does not have a fifth-year option. Assuming he is cleared of domestic violence allegations, Landry should be a prized — and well-paid — free agent next year.
Game Womens Merril Hoge Jersey Martellus Bennett, TE, Packers: The only veteran not on a rookie deal on this list, Bennett signed a very cap-friendly deal in March. The Packers gave him a signing bonus of $6.3 million on his three-year deal worth a total of $21 million. But the bonus is spread out over all three seasons, meaning only $2.1 million per year counts against the salary cap. Add that to his 2017 base salary of $900,000 and a roster bonus of $850,000, Bennett is only costing the Packers $3.85 million this year.
He’s fine. But neither backup defensive tackles — Vernon Butler (knee) and Kyle Love (ankle) — practiced or played the past month. They were targeted for Week 1 and appear on target, but their presence is key to the four-man rotation at tackle and how the defense sets up everything with its interior push.
Wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins missed the majority of the preseason and training camp because of a thumb injury but said he is “1,000 percent” ready to go on Sunday against Jacksonville. The Texans do have two injury question marks at backup running back, however. Coach Bill O’Brien said he wasn’t sure if D’Onta Foreman (groin) or Alfred Blue (ankle) would be available for the season opener against the Jaguars. Foreman was a full participant in practice Wednesday, but Blue did not practice.
Not having starting safety Ron Parker against the Patriots would be a major loss, particularly considering the Chiefs won’t have starting cornerback Steven Nelson, who is on injured reserve after having core muscle surgery. Parker isn’t a playmaker like fellow Kansas City defensive backs Eric Berry and Marcus Peters, but don’t let that fool you. He is one of the Chiefs’ most valuable defensive players because he’s so versatile. The Chiefs aren’t afraid to use him in man coverage, as a deep safety, in the box as a run defender or to rush the quarterback. Parker was listed as questionable for the Patriots game on the week’s final injury report.
Derek Barnett, DE | Philadelphia Eagles: The rookie pass-rusher was earning praise in camp for his “motor,” impressing coaches and teammates with how hard he goes on every single play. What remains to be seen is what kind of role the Eagles have for him and how much they’ll be able to just send him after opposing quarterbacks while he refines the rest of his craft. Philly’s defensive line and scheme play to Barnett’s strengths, and he could lead all rookies in sacks if he gets on the field enough.
Following a brutal first half in which the Houston Texans were booed off the field, Bill O’Brien opted to make a change at quarterback. Tom Savage has been benched, and first round pick Deshaun Watson started the third quarter for Houston.
With Watson at the helm, the Texans capped a 14-play drive with a touchdown pass to DeAndre Hopkins, who was struggling with Savage. Prior to the touchdown pass, Watson led Houston down the field with efficient passing, although he was aided by a pair of penalties that negated a failed third-down conversion and an interception.
“What you want to do is utilize it and have fun with it.”
It may, however, be difficult convincing offensive coordinator Mike Shula to call plays away from McCaffrey.
“He’s just so fun to watch,” Shula said. “You can do different things Brandon Marshall Jersey with him. He’s so smart, so instinctive.
“It is fun, and you’d like to think that, ‘Yeah, you can be real creative and it’s all about what you’re going to do coaching-wise’. No. You want to get those guys the ball and get them comfortable doing what they do best, and he can do a lot of things really well, and give him a Danny Woodhead Womens Jersey chance to go make somebody miss or run somebody over.”
The Panthers have a potentially tough matchup against the Bills this weekend. Jonathan Stewart, who scored last weekend, isn’t going away, either, so McCaffrey could be a shaky fantasy option this weekend.
Womens T.J. Warren Jersey Think about the blocking beauty of Art Monk. Or the blocking tenacity of Cris Carter. Steve Smith was not the biggest receiver, but he was one of the most tenacious blockers.

The first two are already in the Hall of Fame and the third is certainly on his way. Each made plenty of catches and scored plenty of touchdowns.
But they were respected as much by their peers and by coaches for their passionate blocking in the run game.
Little wonder his team finished near the bottom of the NFL last season in explosive run plays of 10 or more yards.
There is no question that a successful running game begins with a potent offensive line and skilled running backs. But once that back breaks into the secondary, the difference between him going for a contained gain or for huge yards is often determined by if his wide receivers are willing and effective blockers.
He has been sifting through America, through the Jaguars, giving it all a shake and a twirl. His NFL peers notice his resiliency and more.
A very impressive individual, a completely self-made guy, a guy working for a company while in school that he bought as well as owning an NFL team, Giants owner John Mara said. Very engaging, thoughtful, a great contributor to the league. He serves on the Health and Safety Committee, which I am on, and he is an impressive contributor there. He chairs the Business Ventures Committee, very important to the ownership. He’s on the Finance Committee. He’s worked with the television group. That’s a lot of important contributions in five years of ownership.
There won’t be any decision for Washington Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins to make. If his wife goes into labor and the Redskins have a game, Cousins will be playing.
Cousins’ wife, Julie, is due with their first child on Sept. 18 — a day after the Redskins play at the Los Angeles Rams.
The Redskins host the Philadelphia Eagles on Sept. 10, but at least in that case he’d be near the hospital and could drive there after the game. But if they play in Los Angeles and she goes into labor, he’ll need to make a cross-country flight to join her.
“He just had surgery last week so it’s slow right now, but the plan with him is that he’d come back at some point during the year,” Telesco told the team’s website Saturday.
Mike Williams was activated from the physically unable to perform list and placed on the Chargers’ active roster to start the season.
Telesco also discussed the decision to remove rookie wide receiver Mike Williams from the physically unable to perform list, saying he was “very encouraged” by the rookie receiver’s progress as he recovers from a herniated disk. Telesco estimated that Williams was “maybe a couple of weeks” away from being able to practice.
Perryman injured his ankle in the Chargers’ preseason opener against the Seattle Seahawks. At the time of his injury, the expected timetable for the linebacker’s return was two months.
This year, however, teams can upgrade from Nike’s Elite 51 uniform template to the Vapor Untouchable template (yes, the names are ridiculous, but try to ignore them), and most have done so. The good news is that the new template is Flywire-free; the bad news is that the new collar has its own mildly annoying Nike branding element: a little triangular badge at the base of the neckline. But that looks way, way better than the Flywire.

I felt helpless as I lay there on the ground handcuffed facing the real-life threat of being killed, Bennett wrote. All I could think of was ‘I’m going to die for no other reason than I am black and my skin color is somehow a threat.’ My life flashed before my eyes as I thought of my girls. Would I ever play with them again?
Limited Kids Morgan Cox Jersey In addition, the Raiders waived wide receiver Jaydon Mickens from their injured reserve list with an injury settlement and terminated linebacker Jelani Jenkins from injured reserve, freeing the veteran to sign with another team.
As of Monday, the Raiders had not named anyone to the injured reserve list, an indication that injuries to guard Denver Kirkland (lower leg) and safety Keith McGill (broken foot) aren’t serious enough to declare them out for half the season.
Watkins said he hopes to expand to the east coast in the near future while the company looks to break into other leagues like the NBA, MLB and NHL.
We’re going by city and by sports franchise, but our goal is to cover all leagues and all teams, Watkins said.
The main reason things have unfolded like this in Baltimore is assuredly the same one that has kept any franchise from offering Kaepernick a job: Fear.
Fear of alienating fans and sponsors who disagree — and I’m putting it mildly — with Kaepernick’s groundbreaking national anthem protest.
And when I say signed, I mean with a strong likelihood of him getting under center during the 2017 campaign. I can’t envision any team being willing to endure all of the scrutiny that would come with acquiring Kaepernick using him as a third-string clipboard holder.
In 2017, the NFC East and NFC South are stronger overall divisions than the NFC West, which gives Seattle the path of least resistance to home-field advantage and its easiest ticket to a third conference title game in five years.

By all accounts, the Falcons are using that Super Bowl collapse as fuel for 2017. Good idea, because every team in the division has the goods to challenge them just to get out of the NFC South. There could be an immediate payoff for the Panthers’ shakeup. The Buccaneers are poised to break through, or at least poised to face the expectations about breaking through. The Saints are hit-and-miss lately, but it’s never smart to assume they’ll keep missing.

This is about perceived reputation, of both Burfict and Cincinnati. That’s not fair. If it’s anybody other than Burfict, it’s not a suspension. Sure, Burfict earned that reputation after a three-game suspension resulting from a hit on Antonio Brown in a 2016 AFC wild-card game, but this seems like way too prior history. Given the NFL’s inconsistent history of selective punishment off the field, it only creates a trap.
Lonzo Ball had himself a game Wednesday against the 76ers. He stuffed the stat sheet with 36 points, 11 assists, eight rebounds, five steals, and two blocks, becoming the first player in Summer League history to put up at least 30 points and 10 assists.
Authentic Youth David Schlemko Jersey These games are exhibitions, but it’s still impressive that Ball was the biggest contributor in his team fighting back from a 14-point deficit. He went from eight first-half points to 36 for the game and turned in a huge second-half performance that included a go-ahead and-1 layup with a few seconds left on the clock.
Ball is the most talked about prospect of this draft class. Even LeBron James showed up to the game to see what all the hype was about.
Kevin Pierre-Louis Authentic Jersey The NFL regular season is almost here, which means it’s time for teams to get their fanbases hyped. One way to do that is to create a new team slogan everyone can rally around. The Patriots created No Days Off during their Super Bowl parade, and now the Colts have created their own for the 2017 season.
There are many definitions of forged and none of them really make sense with this hashtag. The replies to the tweet were all from confused fans wondering what exactly the tweet was trying to convey. So far, it doesn’t look like the Colts have any answers.
The Colts have this tweet pinned to the top of their account, so at least for the moment they are going all-in on this hashtag. Maybe the backlash will get them to rethink whether to keep it in the long run.
Menelik Watson took an uneventful preseason game and turned it into the most memorable night of his life.
The Broncos right tackle surprised his girlfriend, Azania Stewart, with an in-game proposal on Saturday during the team’s third exhibition game against the Packers.
“It was her first NFL game,” Watson said, via the team’s website . “She’s about to head back overseas to start her season. She leaves tomorrow. It’s something I’ve been thinking about for a while. I’ve been contemplating it. What a perfect time to do it: in our stadium, the first game, in front of a beautiful crowd. I’m not really a public person, but I just thought it would be something special that we could remember forever.”
Hank Aaron has weighed in on the controversy surrounding Colin Kaepernick, saying the quarterback is “getting a raw deal” from NFL owners.
The Baseball Hall of Famer spoke to Roland Martin of TV One on Wednesday and lamented Kaepernick’s situation.
“If you look at all the quarterbacks in the league right now, you have to say he is one, two, three, four. I don’t think anybody can do the things he could do. I just wish somebody would open up and give him a chance to do his thing,” Aaron said.
Okung fit in with a group of good-but-not-great left tackles who were receiving contracts worth around $11 million a season and $35 million in the first three years. The Chargers made him the highest-paid tackle in the NFL at $13.25 million a year and $39 million in the first three. The Chargers have whiffed on high-priced offensive linemen in recent years and will hope this is not another mistake.
